Pingdom alternative: Uptime Tracker

Comparing Pingdom and Uptime Tracker: synthetic and real-user monitoring versus focused uptime checks with a free plan, status pages, incidents and on-call.

Updated By the Uptime Tracker team

Summary

Pingdom is a SolarWinds product that offers synthetic monitoring and real user monitoring for website performance. Uptime Tracker is a focused uptime monitoring service with a free plan, status pages, incidents and team alerting. Pick Pingdom if you need transaction checks or real-user performance data; pick Uptime Tracker if you want straightforward availability monitoring and status communication at a flat price.

Quick summary

Uptime Tracker is a practical Pingdom alternative when your main goal is knowing whether sites, APIs and jobs are up, telling customers through a status page and alerting the right person. Pingdom, part of SolarWinds, goes further into web performance with synthetic monitoring and real user monitoring (RUM). If you need scripted transaction checks or visitor performance data, Pingdom covers ground Uptime Tracker does not.

What Uptime Tracker offers

Uptime Tracker provides availability monitoring with confirmed failures, automatic incidents and hosted status pages. HTTP checks record response time with a DNS, connect, TLS and time-to-first-byte breakdown, and can assert on status codes and keywords. Starter adds any HTTP method, custom headers, request bodies and JSONPath or regex assertions; Team adds chained multi-step API workflows.

  • Free ($0): 2 standard monitors at a 5-minute interval, 5 heartbeat monitors, 1 status page, 1 login seat, email, Slack, Discord, Telegram and signed webhook alerts. Commercial use is allowed.
  • Starter ($9/month or $90/year): 10 monitors down to 60-second checks, 10 heartbeat monitors, 3 status pages with custom domains, 2 seats, SMS from prepaid credit, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, Pushover, ntfy, Gotify, Mattermost and Rocket.Chat, routing rules, ping, domain expiry and advanced HTTP checks.
  • Team ($49/month or $490/year): 50 monitors down to 30-second checks, 50 heartbeat monitors, 10 status pages including private password-protected pages, 10 seats plus 20 read-only guest viewers, PagerDuty, on-call rotations, escalation policies, monitor dependencies, gRPC, SMTP/IMAP and multi-step API workflows.

Every new owner can try Team free for 14 days without a card; the trial ends on Free automatically. Annual billing costs 10 times the monthly price. Downgrading never deletes data: excess monitors are paused and excess status pages archived.

Reports include time-weighted availability, latency percentiles and CSV export; Starter adds scheduled weekly or monthly email reports and deployment markers from CI, and Team adds SLOs and error budgets. See website monitoring and status pages.

Current limitations, stated plainly: checks run from a single probe location today, with additional probe regions planned. There are no voice-call alerts, no browser or synthetic (scripted click-through) checks, and heartbeat monitors accept expected intervals from 15 seconds up to 1 hour, so daily or weekly jobs are not a fit yet. HTTPS monitors show the certificate expiry date and alert when a certificate is expired or invalid, but there are no separate advance expiry warning emails yet.

Where Pingdom is a strong choice

Pingdom is a strong choice for teams focused on end-user web performance. Its public pages describe two main products: synthetic monitoring, which simulates user interactions such as logins or checkouts, and real user monitoring, which measures how actual visitors experience your pages.

  • If you need browser-based transaction checks, Uptime Tracker does not offer browser or synthetic checks.
  • If you want real-user performance data by page, browser or geography, Uptime Tracker does not collect RUM data.
  • If your organization already uses other SolarWinds tools, staying within that ecosystem may simplify procurement and integrations.
  • Pingdom has a long history and is a recognized name in website monitoring.

Switching from Pingdom

To move uptime checks from Pingdom, recreate them with CSV import or the API, then recreate alerts and status pages. Synthetic transaction checks and RUM have no equivalent in Uptime Tracker and should stay where they are if you rely on them.

  1. Create a workspace and set your time zone, which drives routing windows and on-call handoffs.
  2. List your uptime checks and import them with a CSV file, or create them via the REST API or monctl.
  3. For checks that send POST requests or custom headers, use advanced HTTP monitors (Starter). Store secrets encrypted and reference them from headers.
  4. Recreate alert channels and, on Starter or Team, routing rules by tag, monitor, event or time window.
  5. Run both tools in parallel before turning off the old checks.

Historical data does not transfer. The help center covers the CSV format and API.

Bottom line

Choose Pingdom if web performance, scripted transactions or real-user data matter to you. Choose Uptime Tracker if you want availability monitoring, status pages and incident workflows at a flat price with a permanent free plan. Many teams can also combine both.
